Check a Video Before You Send It

A video file remembers where it was recorded, when, and on which phone — often down to the street. See what yours carries, choose what to remove, and get a new copy that is read back and checked. The picture and the sound are not changed at all.

What this checks

Where and when it was recorded

The coordinates a phone writes into the file (©xyz, loci, com.apple.quicktime.location.ISO6709) and the recording date and time, both in the metadata and in the movie, track and media headers. These are shown to you with their real values before anything is removed.

Which device, and names written into the file

Maker, model and software version of the camera or phone; title, author, artist, description, comments and keywords; and XMP packets, which often carry the author and the editing history.

What this version does NOT check

It does not look at the picture and does not listen to the sound. Faces, number plates, screens, documents held up to the camera, name badges and anything said out loud are not inspected and not blurred. Subtitle and text tracks are not read either. The result page lists these as not checked, and the verdict is never "safe" — only "no remaining detected risks in what was inspected".

Questions

Does the video get re-encoded? Will the quality drop?

No. Nothing is re-encoded and not one frame is touched. The metadata boxes are overwritten in place with empty space of exactly the same size, so every other byte — including all the picture and sound data — stays exactly where it was. The check afterwards compares the new copy with the original byte by byte outside those boxes, and a change anywhere else makes the check fail.

How do I know the location is really gone?

The new copy is read back from its own bytes, with no memory of what was supposed to have happened, and searched again for everything you chose to remove. A value only gets a tick when the second reading cannot find it. If it is still there, the result says so.

Which files can I check?

MP4 and MOV files (including .m4v and 3GP), up to 500 MB, one at a time. Other formats — MKV, WebM, AVI — are not read in this version. A file larger than 500 MB is refused rather than half-checked.

Does this tool upload my video?

No. Everything happens in this browser tab, and only the small metadata parts of the file are ever read — a 500 MB video is never loaded into memory in one piece. You can check this yourself: the steps are in the Trust Center.

Need to hide what the video shows?

This page removes what the file records about the recording. To cover faces, licence plates or text in the picture itself, use one of these — they run in your browser too, and nothing is hidden unless you choose it:
