Remove Personal Information From a Word Document

A Word document carries more than its text: who wrote and edited it, comments, earlier versions of sentences, hidden text and the metadata of pictures inside it. See all of it and choose what to remove.

The tool runs in your browser (JavaScript required). Nothing is uploaded.

What is checked in the file

  • Author and last modified by, company, created / modified / printed dates
  • Custom document properties and document variables
  • Comments and the list of reviewers
  • Tracked changes, including deleted text still stored in the file
  • Hidden text
  • Metadata of pictures inside the document (location, time, camera) and the first-page preview picture
  • Emails, phone numbers, card and ID numbers and your own terms in the text — see Redact personal information

Flagged, not changed

Embedded objects (for example a spreadsheet), macros, moved text in tracked changes, table revisions and drawings in formats we cannot inspect are shown so you can handle them — they are not changed automatically.

Questions

Isn't File → Info → Inspect Document enough?

Word's Document Inspector removes many of these items, but it does not show you each value it found or recheck the result. Here you see each item, decide, and the new copy is reopened and scanned again.

Which files are supported?

.docx files. Older .doc files are not checked yet — open them in Word and use Save As .docx first.

Is the document uploaded?

No. It is processed in your browser and the new copy is handed to you as a download.

Will the layout change?

Removing metadata, comments and hidden text does not change the rest of the document. Replacing text in the body can change line breaks where the replacement is shorter or longer.
