Remove Comments From a Word Document

Comments travel with the document, including replies, reviewer names and internal discussion. Choose to delete them, keep them with names hidden, or keep them as they are.

Delete, anonymise or keep

Delete — comments, replies and their anchors are removed from the file, including the extra parts where Word stores reply threads
Keep but hide who wrote them — choose Keep for comments, then add the reviewers' names under "Add your own private terms" with Label or Pseudonym; the names are replaced on every comment
Keep — comments stay exactly as they are and are listed as kept by you

Hiding is not deleting

Turning off "Show comments" or choosing "No Markup" in Word only changes what you see on screen. The comments are still in the file and anyone who opens it can show them again.

Questions

Are comment replies removed too?

Yes. Deleting comments removes the whole thread, and the new copy is checked for leftover comment markers in every part of the document, including headers and footers.

What about personal information inside comments I keep?

Emails, phone numbers and your own terms are also found and replaced inside comment text, even if you keep the comments.

Is the reviewer list removed?

The reviewer list is a separate item. It lists everyone who commented or tracked changes and can be removed on its own.

Does this use Word?

No. The file is read and rewritten in your browser; Word does not need to be installed.
